There are some places you visit for just the checklist. And then there are some places where you forget you ever had a plan and find something extra.
Palampur was that kind of place for me.
I arrived there expecting to explore the tea gardens, mountain views, and the usual Himachal photographs. And yes, Palampur has all of that too. But the more I wandered away from the obvious tourist stops, the more interesting the town became for me.
A pottery village hidden behind green hills. A monastery where the whole afternoon feels moving slower. Forest paths, little temples, streams, and roads where the Dhauladhar range suddenly appears between the trees.
So, if you’re planning a trip and don’t want to spend every day following the same route that every tourist does.

A few things that will make your Palampur trip better
Don’t pack your itinerary too tightly. Palampur rewards the people who leave room for unexpected stops.
- Carry comfortable shoes
- Light jacket
- Sunscreen
- Reusable water bottle
- Keep some cash with you for smaller local businesses
Don’t depend completely on estimated driving times when you’re exploring mountain roads. Most importantly, respect the places you’re visiting.
Don’t litter near streams, don’t enter private tea plantations without permission, and be respectful around temples and monasteries.
And if you find a quiet viewpoint that isn’t written in your itinerary? Stop right there.
That’s probably the Palampur you came looking for.
The Palampur I would come back for….
I think that’s what makes Palampur special. You don’t necessarily remember the places where you spent ten minutes taking photographs.
You remember the unexpected ones. The road that wasn’t on Google Maps. The cup of tea you weren’t planning to have. The pottery you made badly but kept anyway. The monastery where you sat longer than expected.
